Long ago, the gods (Devas) and the demons (Asuras) sought the nectar of immortality (Amrita), hidden deep within the cosmic ocean. To retrieve it, they joined forces to churn the ocean using the divine serpent Vasuki as a rope and Mount Mandara as a churning rod.
As they churned, poison, celestial treasures, and divine beings emerged from the ocean. Finally, Lakshmi rose from the waters, seated on a lotus flower, radiating beauty and abundance.
She chose Vishnu, the preserver of the universe, as her eternal consort, signifying that prosperity flourishes where wisdom and righteousness prevail.
