Inanna, one of the most powerful deities of ancient Sumerian mythology, is the goddess of love, fertility, war, and transformation. She is both a bringer of passion and destruction, embodying the raw energy of creation and change. Later syncretised with the Akkadian Ishtar, she was revered as the morning and evening star, connected to the planet Venus.
One of her most famous myths is Inanna’s Descent into the Underworld, where she voluntarily enters the land of the dead, shedding her garments and divine power at each gate until she stands naked before her sister, Ereshkigal. She is struck dead and left to rot, but through divine intervention, she is resurrected and reborn, symbolising the cycle of death and renewal. This myth reflects deep personal transformation, facing one’s shadows, and emerging stronger.
Inanna’s energy is bold, sensual, and unstoppable, reminding us that love and power can coexist, and that true transformation often requires surrendering who we were to become who we are meant to be.
Poem for Inanna
Upon the throne, in golden might,
A goddess fierce, both dark and light.
With burning love and battle’s call,
She rises high, yet dares to fall.
Through seven gates, her crown is lost,
Her pride stripped bare, her soul the cost.
Yet from the dark, she claims her throne,
A queen reborn, her power grown.

Why Inanna Inspires Us
Inanna teaches us that true power comes through transformation. She reminds us that to evolve, we must be willing to descend into the depths of our own soul, to face our fears, and to rise again, stronger than before. Her journey through the underworld symbolises the cycles of death and rebirth, surrender and reclamation, loss and empowerment. Through her, we learn to embrace both our softness and our strength, our passion and our power.
